Welcome to the Pros Fic Index - an ambitious project to help us keep track of those Pros stories with titles and authors we can't quite remember, but where we know full-well that it was the one with the parrot. Or the one in Scotland. Or the one where Doyle wears a bowler hat. *g* Now we have somewhere to come and search for those little words that we do remember - and just maybe find that fic!
The index will grow and be most useful the more help we have - please join in by adding Pros stories in comments to the various key word posts - just click on the key words in this post, below. If there's no key word here, then make a post with the key word in the subject, and a list of any stories that match the key word. Hopefully other people will add to your list in the comments, and your key word will be added to the master list.
Happy reading! (And forgive glitches in the layout - hopefully it'll get better!) - oh! And do feel free to ask any questions etc, here in the comments to this post (if you ask them in comments to the keyword posts, we'll answer them there, but then delete the comments, to keep the keyword posts/comments as clear as possible).
Frequently Asked Questions if there's anything else you'd like to know (well, questions people might ask alot... *g*)

Date: 2016-04-01 01:40 pm (UTC)When I try to put the link to No Options into a comment it always is like this http://thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/13/nooption.html . I'm not able to make it work that it only says #
No Option and than jumps to the story.
Would is it I do wrong? Please help me!

Date: 2016-04-01 01:57 pm (UTC)Hmmn, sounds odd - you made links perfectly yesterday. Are you doing it the same way?
(I'm not sure how much coding you usually do, so I'm going to assume that you click buttons rather than work with the actual code - so sorry if you do know what you're doing, I'm not trying to be patronising! Also, it might be useful if anyone else has the same problem, or isn't sure how to do it.)
I'm going to test the link button and see if it works for me...
http://thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/13/nooption.html (http://thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/13/nooption.html)
Okay, I see what you mean - same thing! And the good news is that I can see what's going wrong, too! It must be an lj glitch.
Right - what we needed was a place not just to paste the link, but also to paste what we want the link to be called (No Option). Lj didn't give us that second space, and I can see from the code that what it's done is fill that place with a copy of the URL again.
if I slip in an asterisk we can see what the code looks like (because the asterisk stops it doing what it's told *g*)
<*a href="http://thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/13/nooption.html">http://thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/13/nooption.html
See how it's just repeated the URL twice?
This is what it should look like - <*a href="http://thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/13/nooption.html">No Option
Which without the asterisk comes out like this - No Option (http://thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/13/nooption.html). Perfect!
So - when you're making your comment, can you see the code that lj uses to make the link (starting with <a href=)? If so, then it's a simple fix - just replace the second URL in the code with the name of the story! This is actually what set me off learning simple lj code about ten years ago - I couldn't get the link button to work, and I didn't know that you could write links in as code yourself. Luckily someone told me, and I decided to always use the code myself, so that I could always work out what was going wrong and fix it! This was back when lj was completely different, mind... *g* But even now with all the buttons I usually just type <a href="... etc. *g* I'm here for the next half an hour if you want to try it - then I'll be back from about 5.30pm!

Date: 2016-04-01 02:11 pm (UTC)In the posts it is easy, because there is the possibility to change the line when I start behind the first letter. And than I delet everything I don't need. And that wasn't possible in the comments. But now I know how it shoult go and after a while it will be easier and easier for me. :-)

Give me a day or two...

Date: 2016-04-05 12:59 am (UTC)And there a several comments with more stories, and I'll have to check to see who has amnesia in those.
How do I best sort this out, to separate them into Doyle and Bodie categories?
Just start over, with a separate post for each character, incorporate the stories from the comments, and delete the original?
And use both the amnesia, and for example Doyle-amnesia tags?
Will the "just" amnesia tag lead to all amnesia stories that way?
no subject
Date: 2016-04-05 07:23 am (UTC)My suggestion would be to stick with just the "amnesia" post for now, and put all the suggestions under that.
But - we could also create "amnesia - Doyle" and an "amnesia - Bodie" posts, and then when people do know which is which (when they've just read the fic for instance) they might choose one or the other, or the general post. And if we tag all three posts "amnesia" then they'll all come up when people are looking, and hopefully they'll find what they want on one of the lists.
If you/we know any of the stories now, then we could split them, but not if it's tons of research work for you. Not that it's horrid to have to read the fics, but it's time consuming... *g*
So, for instance, I remember that
- Saints and Miracles = amnesia - Doyle
- The Gemini Factor = amnesia - Bodie
- Professional Dreamer = amnesia - Doyle
Does that make sense?

Date: 2016-04-05 10:18 pm (UTC)I'll create the two posts now, and add what I know. :)
Parrot

Did I do this right?
RE: Parrot
Date: 2016-04-04 07:05 am (UTC)- post to the community
- Use "parrot" in the subject line, as you've done here
- post your links, just as you've done here (I tend to put "by author" outside the link, just to make it easier to read)
- hit post! *g*
- other people might then comment to your post with other stories that use that keyword, and if you can it would be brilliant if you could edit them into your post. If not, then we're trying to keep the keyword comments clean of everything else so that storylinks are easy to find there too.
And that's it! *g*

Date: 2016-04-04 08:07 pm (UTC)And yeah, it made sense... *g* (I like having the tag list on my own lj, as an index - when I keep up with them!)
Don't you see the tags right off with them up there as the sticky post though? It's only one click to de-collapse the post!

Date: 2016-04-05 07:16 am (UTC)Oh - actually what we could do is what I did at Ci5hq - add the tags list as a link to the sidebar - and make it really obvious, like "tags list"! *g* That way people have a quick way of getting to them, if they'd rather search that way. They'd still have to click to get to it, but.... I think we may be getting a wee bit lazy if we can't manage one click... *vbg*

Date: 2016-04-05 02:36 pm (UTC)I thought this sounded like a good idea (http://byslantedlight.livejournal.com/590384.html?thread=9041456#t9041456), cos it'd be helpful to match the eps! At first I thought a separate ep-keyword index, and we could still do that one day, but we could perhaps list them here too - "roses" would bring up a few, for instance, so if someone writing a fic wanted to know what episodes the roses were in... *g*
What d'you think?
no subject
Date: 2016-04-05 08:09 pm (UTC)I think the episodes are still online at youtube, so maybe it is possible to make a link like this one Episode A Hiding To Nothing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-nuajerMxw)
What do you think?
no subject
Date: 2016-04-05 08:27 pm (UTC)To be honest I don't think we need any kind of link for the episode titles - everyone on the comm is going to be a Pros fan, so they'll know where to find them (mostly on their own dvds *g*). And it would be a pain to have to fix links every time a vid was taken down.
I've actually already included one of the episodes as a keyword in the index - for DiaG - and just put the title (in Title Case *g*) and "(episode)" afterwards. I'd suggest something as simple as that, to be honest. Maybe use italics for the title, to distinguish it. I reckon we should try and keep things as simple as we can, otherwise we'll end up making an awful lot of work...!

Date: 2016-04-05 10:39 pm (UTC)Do you mean, for example, listing all the episodes involving a hospital would be listed under that keyword?
Would it be in the same post, along with the stories, or a separate one?
no subject
Date: 2016-04-05 10:53 pm (UTC)Originally I thought of doing a separate index, like the non-English stories index that
But then I thought why not combine it with the story keywords, if only to start with (cos making more than one index will be more time-consuming!). And they're useful for people writing fic, so not entirely unrelated... *g*
So yeah, for instance if the keyword was "hospital" then there'd be perhaps the eps with a hospital at the top of the list (or in a second column, if I can work out the code without making a table - do you know how to do that? I think it's summat to do with span... *g*), just in italics so that they stand out as not-fics, and then the stories with hospitals.
Does that make sense?

Date: 2016-04-06 05:45 am (UTC)I think we should create a "mods-only" post where we could discuss all questions and ideas hat cross our minds. What do you think? I could create it in the evening.
no subject
Date: 2016-04-06 08:55 am (UTC)A mod-organsing post is perhaps an idea, to save us deleting comments here to keep the thread tidy for people using the comm. Though I think it's good to discuss ideas in public too, in case other people want to contribute thoughts. But for the more organise-y things, then yeah. *g*
I may or may not be on line this evening. I'm hoping so cos I'll have work to send, and I should at least be able to get on with my phone, but if I'm not here around it's hopefully just cos I'm travelling!

RE: Frustration
Date: 2016-04-06 10:37 pm (UTC)That said, your code is missing the closing anchor, which is why the words after are underlined too. It thinks you've told it to make a link, which it has done, but you didn't tell it when to stop. I'm guessing you used lj's link button to make the links, and it seems to have a glitch. And since this happened to one of the mods not long ago, I can point you to our handy-dandy FAQs, this time... *g* Basically all you need to do is edit your post to add at the end of each link. That should do the trick (make sure they look like the links in the FAQ examples and you should be good!)
